Rwanda | Ngoma Bikunda Island - Natural Red Bourbon
This coffee was produced by seven smallholder farmers who live on Bikunda Hill on Lake Kivu. These farmers were selected by Baho Coffee Company, which owns the Ngoma coffee washing station at which this coffee was processed. In order to build a sense of teamwork and togetherness, the farmers were given the same delivery day and sailed in the same boat to deliver their coffees. This level of traceability - specific farmers, specific hills - is quite unique for East African coffees. By connecting more closely with producers this way, we’re able to ensure we continue to build with them into the future. The beauty of the hills surrounding Lake Kivu, as well as the beauty of these farmers’ cooperation, is reflected in this splendid and vibrant coffee. In this cup we find a vibrant and juicy profile that reminds us of cranberries, guava, and dark chocolate.

“This specific lot consists of coffee from 7 farmers who live on Bikunda Hill on the famous Lake Kivu. Back in 2019, we visited Bugoyi station, which is also situated on Lake Kivu and met Joseph, a grower who lived on an island and brought cherries across to the station. He had played a role in motivating his fellow producers to do the same, and we discussed with Emmanuel how we could improve this.
As these hills and islands on the lake are the epitome of distinct microclimates and communities, not only does this allow us to trace the coffee back to the individual groups going into the future, but also allows us to isolate a specific cup characteristic related to this microclimate. As this is a difficult journey, Baho not only pays farmgate prices way over the national farmgate price but also covers the transportation fees associated with delivering cherries to Ngoma. This is the first step in building a transparent and equitable relationship with groups of farmers that we hope will deliver to Ngoma for many years to come.” - Semilla
